What is Credit Karma?

Credit Karma lets you check your credit score anytime and anywhere. The company also helps you simulate changes to your credit score by weighing your outstanding credit card balances, length of credit history, payment history, types of credit accounts and applications for new credit accounts. The company gives people access to their credit score and credit report from TransUnion and Equifax and provides weekly updates and product recommendations.

How does Credit Karma work?

Credit Karma members receive free credit monitoring and financial tools as well as access to thousands of customer reviews on products Credit Karma recommends, including credit cards and loans. Available financial tools include a credit score simulator, debt repayment calculator, simple loan calculator and amortization calculator.

Through Credit Karma, consumers can apply for any of the following credit card options:

  • Balance transfer cards
  • Reward cards
  • Travel cards
  • Cash back cards
  • 0% APR cards
  • Business cards
  • Cards for fair credit
  • Cards for bad credit

Credit Karma also helps members file their taxes and find personal, home and auto loans.

Is Credit Karma free?

Credit Karma’s services are free. The company will never ask for your credit card information. Credit reports, financial tools and tax filing services are free with Credit Karma.

There are financial products available from banks and lenders on its site, which is how Credit Karma makes its money. Credit Karma receives payment from its partners if you purchase one of the products the company recommends.

Credit Karma FAQ

Is it safe to use Credit Karma?

Credit Karma has a dedicated security system and bug bounty program to help protect the data on its site, and it uses 128-bit encryption to protect users. Additionally, the company promises to never share or sell your personal information to third parties without your consent.

Are the credit scores on Credit Karma accurate?

Credit Karma reports include credit scores and information from TransUnion and Equifax, two of the three major credit bureaus. It does not use Experian, the third major credit bureau, so the reported score may not be 100% accurate.

Has Credit Karma been hacked?

The company did experience a technical malfunction in August 2019, but there was no confirmation of a data breach.

How much is Credit Karma?

Credit Karma’s services are free to consumers. The site makes money when people purchase financial products from other banks or lenders on its website.

Is Credit Karma safe?

Because Credit Karma offers free extensive financial resources and helps people understand their credit reports and credit scores, we think it’s a good service — even though it doesn’t have reporting from one of the three major credit bureaus. We recommend Credit Karma for its free financial tools, resources and tax filing capabilities.

I proactively contacted Credit Karma immediately after noticing fraud on my account while fraudulent purchases on my spend account were still pending. It's been a week and it is not resolved..at this point the hacker probably walked away with the goods purchased with my money. My money is still not in my account. They scrutinized my ID more than they did the hacker's, photos with my ID under my chin, passcodes, etc. I wish they made it this hard for the hacker to use my funds AND that they returned my money immediately upon my calling them the first time.

Absolutely the worst "budgeting" app I've ever used. Why I transferred all of my Mint transactions is beyond me. I finally cancelled CK after discovering that is nothing more than a giant upsell for credit cards, insurance, and other financial come-ons. Don't bother.

Bogus offers, especially with the "outstanding approval odds" companies. These companies always deny the credit card or loan offers, and while they're at it, they ding your credit score to keep it lowered. Don't trust any of the offers that are offered. Best Egg is bad, but Reprise is the worst.

Been using CK for years. On 4/1 My account was hacked. Called and waited on hold for 2 hours before getting someone. In the meantime, my phone number and email was changed in my account. These jackets knew how to have all CK emails go directly to my trash folder. They drained my entire account literally while I was on the phone with the "fraud' dept. Some of the transactions went back to my account but only a fraction of what was stolen. I've spoken to multiple people who keep saying it's been escalated to a specialty team that only communicates through email. After reading reviews, I'm afraid I'm not going to get my money back.

This company is the worse on customer service. After my account was hacked I was constantly calling and speaking with people that did not understand this was a case of identity theft and I was sending my identification over and over, I was told once I didn’t have a account and was hung up on. Money was being deducted out of my account repeatedly. 6 days and I still haven’t gotten access to my account.

I have been using Credit Karma for 10 years. I used their bill pay to pay my credit card bill back in February. My company never received the payment then I had to report CK to the better business bureau just to get a response. All email correspondence from CK has done nothing but cause confusion and misinformation. I was told Monday of this month that my funds would be back in my account 1 to 3 business days. On the 3rd business day I got another email saying the same thing. Now five days after the first email still haven’t got the money back and of course no explanation on why or an update on a delay short term. They be stealing and I’m not sure how safe your personal information is with them either. Definitely would advise a different company. Also if I could give 0 stars I would based off the way you need all my personal info just to say I’m not able to answer that. No customer service skills at all. The company is stressful to deal with. Great if you just need to check your credit but don’t give them any money.

My MINT account was obliterated and was supposed to show up at Credit Karma. It didn’t. I contacted them - mostly machine and then more glorified machines that did not answer my question: how do I obtain my account data I kept in MINT over a number of years? Their convoluted response with limited transactions allowed demonstrates that I will not obtain the transactions I entered on MINT. Intuit has demonstrated no responsibility in restoring my data. I will never use any of their products again.

Today looking over my information on Credit Karma, under the recommendations from them. I applied for a balance transfer which I was approved of. But because of them being useless and not knowing what they're doing, I was not able to use said balance transfer because it was from the same Institution. This was one of those transfers that said recommended in yellow next to the column for balance transfers it was for 0% for 21 months. They are very misleading and they don't have the correct information. I tried to do a chat with someone, but that person acted stupider than Credit Karma did recommending that balance transfer in the first place. If I was able to give them zero Stars I would. If your job is to give the people tools and information regarding their credit, and fail to do so with false truth and inaccurate information. Nowhere on there did it say the balance transfer could not be done from the same credit Institution.

Horrible customer service. I can't understand any of the foreigners on the phone, and when I use the live chat they abruptly end it and refuse to speak to me saying I need to provide the correct info. Each time I have provided my correct credentials as listed in my credit karma app and account. Two weeks to clear check deposits, slow and sometimes completely none functionality app. Run!!

As others have complained, I was forced to migrate my information to Credit Karma. The site is absolutely useless as a finance management. I have to go through numerous steps to get around to the information I think I need. Only to find that the format is in a totally unusable layout. I cannot group transactions by date, or amount, or any function other than just a list. I cannot graph transactions to ANY sort of filter or date range. It is absolutely USELESS!!!!
