Government Action: BBB reports on known government actions involving business’ marketplace conduct::
    Pennsylvania vs Prog Leasing, LLC

The following describes a pending government action that has been formally brought by a government agency but has not yet been resolved. We are providing a summary of the government’s allegations, which have not yet been proven. I'm

On 25 Jan 2024, Progressive Leasing settled a lawsuit originally filed in 2022 with the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office. The lawsuit alleged that Progressive failed to comply with the Rental Purchase Agreement Act that required lessors to place physical tags - with complete financing cost information - on goods offered for rent. The cost of rent-to-own financing is typically equivalent to a loan with 152% interest.

As a result of the settlement, the Office of Attorney General will distribute $850,000 in restitution to eligible consumers who paid back significantly more than the price of the item they rented. In addition, Progressive will cancel balances for 972 consumers who entered into rental purchases prior to September 8, 2022.

Impacted consumers do not need to take any action to receive debt cancellation or restitution under the settlement. Consumers due relief will be contacted by either Progressive (for debt cancellation) or the Attorney General's settlement administrator (for restitution).

I have a contract through Progressive Leasing for some items that I bought at Biglots in Medford, Oregon. I was planning on baking my pay it off with 90 days because I’m a California resident and was figuring that amount out when I suddenly realized I was being charged sales tax for an item that was purchased in a state that does not charge sales tax and it was not on the invoice. I called the company who proceeded to tell me after I got the second person on the phone that I needed to send them or business or tax laws because they didn’t have that information about organ not charging sales tax even though they indicated there was no sales tax on the invoice that they were financing for me. They proceeded to add to add sales tax to my cost of my items to pay it off and basically tell me to go suck a lemon and I wasn’t getting that income tax back and they were sending it to the state of California who was not even an entity in my purchase. I was in Medford Oregon. But I think that if they’re sending and I don’t know that they sent the money to California that’s what they say. Is this just to get an interest charge from people who pay it off in 90 days if they don’t have taxi just throw this on in the back door so maybe we don’t notice. I may be poor, but I’m educated so I don’t know what games are playing but refusing to stop charging me the tax for an item that there was no charge of tax on the invoice is a point that I file a complaint with you and Oregon and the state of California tax boards also. I’ll leave this in your hands as indicated I would like the $20. already paid.I just want this type of practice stopped before they devastate somebody financially .Sorry for the rambling you may contact me back or not. Thank you very much.

I created this account because of Kay Jewelers. I was told that if I paid it off in 90 days I would only pay the amount of the jewelry. This was incorrect information. I paid almost double in four months. The people at Kay tell you that if you pay it off in 90 days or 180 days you will not pay any interest. This isn't true. I will never use this service again. I will stick with no interest rate services.
